Dictionary.com defines a superhero as, hero, esp. in children’s comic books and television cartoons, possessing extraordinary, often magical powers.
The all-knowing Wikipedia defines it as, a superhero is a type of stock character dedicated to protecting the public. Going on to say, by most definitions, characters do not strictly require actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes.
I suppose we want superheroes who have great powers, but we also want ones who are normal joes just like us.
My favorite superheroes fall into the category of not having superpowers. Batman and the the Punisher. Normal guys, who when pissed with an agenda become superheroes. Vigilantes some may say. Say what you will, I put my money on either of them over you.
Deep inside, we want heroes like Batman and Punisher to succeed because if they do, then we all can be superheroes. Normal guys and gals, doing the extraordinary. The Watchmen, Kick Ass. Normal guys, who wanted to go beyond normal.
In all us of is the power to be a superhero. We can save lives. Each one of us has the power to alleviate the pain of the oppressed. Are we too wrapped up in our own lives to do anything about the oppressed? Many times the answer is yes.
Clean water, clean clothes, food, education, the list is endless of what we can do in our small scale sphere of influence.
